Eventually I was doing a service semester for the college I was going to in Costa Rica, and I encountered the silent - unprogrammed Quakers there in Monteverde. But I was kind of raised, in a basic Protestant-Methodist church later on. So I think I’m the only like Italian-Amish person on the planet, I think. And my father was raised Methodist, but his family background was Mennonite, Amish. She’s a first generation American from an Italian family. TIPPETT: As much as being a Quaker celebrity? I’m a Hoosier, which impresses people everywhere. NEWCOMER: Well, I was raised in Northern Indiana. So would you talk about what that was and how you came to this tradition. That wasn’t the religious background of your childhood. But, I wasn’t sure of this until I started to delve into this, that you weren’t raised Quaker. I know, but people often, I notice that journalists often refer to you as a Quaker singer. It’s kind of a phrase that you don’t usually see paired together. CARRIE NEWCOMER: Well, I’ve never heard that before. You’re something of a celebrity in Quaker circles.

It’s so wonderful to have Carrie Newcomer here. TIPPETT: So, welcome to On Being on Loring Park. I welcomed Carrie Newcomer and her guitar to the On Being studios on Loring Park in Minneapolis in 2014, before a live audience. TIPPETT: I’m Krista Tippett, and this is On Being. She’s also an interesting collaborator in writing and performance with author and educator Parker Palmer, novelist Barbara Kingsolver, and neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor. TIPPETT: Indiana-born and based, Carrie Newcomer has been called a “prairie mystic.” She’s best known for her story-songs like “Betty’s Diner,” that get at raw and redemptive edges of human reality.

“They will enjoy the full range of sensations this position allows.KRISTA TIPPETT, HOST: Today, a musical conversation with folk singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer. “In this position, the receiving partner lies on their side with legs bent, facing away from their partner, who stands at the edge of the bed and enters from behind,” Kovach says. Thanks to Sagittarius’ affinity for flexibility and adventure, Kovach says putting a (literal) twist on a common sex position is the way to go. “Start out on equal ground but then advance to have the receiving person on the edge of the bed while their partner stands on the floor behind them.” Kovach also suggests that for some Scorpios, adding in toys and perhaps BDSM accessories may cater to a lust for kink. Spice things up even more by varying the position. “As the sign obsessed with power and intimacy, Scorpio loves position,” Kovach says. “They want to make sure everything is equal in the sexual encounter.” This is why she recommends the 69 position, where both partners engage in oral sex simultaneously in a head-to-foot position, so both parties are giving and receiving pleasure at once. “Libras are conscious of sharing and are compassionate and loving,” Kovach says. “They prefer to feel safe underneath their partner,” she says. Furthermore, Kovach adds, they rarely want to be on top. So, there’s no need to get fancy when it comes to sex positions-missionary will work just fine for this sign. Kovach says that this sign is sensitive and nurturing in nature and prefers slow, romantic, and affectionate lovemaking.

wants to see things from every perspective.” Cancer: missionary on the bottom “Make sure you swap positions and change who is on top or in a dominant position as well. “Start out making love up against a wall, then move onto a table, the floor, a chair, and so forth,” Kovach says. Take the standing spoon, for instance, which involves one person standing and the other up against a wall. Gemini gets bored quickly, so to keep things spicy in the love department, Kovach suggests positions that involve some acrobatics and don’t confine them to one space. “Taurus needs to have all senses engaged, so bringing scented oils or even foods like chocolate into the bedroom is a turn-on for Taurus.” Gemini: standing spoon “Be sure to run your hands all over Taurus’s body, or everywhere within reach, during sex,” Kovach says. However, they prefer a slow and steady pace to lovemaking, which is why Kovach recommends the classic missionary position lying down with full-body contact. Taurus, too, loves being on top and in control during sex.
